Founded in 2015 by Aida Kim and Larz Harry, MAN–TLE is an Australian clothing label produced by Heavy Weight Clothing Pty Ltd, a design and fabrication company specialising in the production of textiles, garments, accessories and objects with expert Japanese manufacturers. We work from our studio at MAN–TLE in Perth, WA, which is also our flagship store. Our range is also available via this webshop, and from a network of select international retailers.MAN–TLE garments prioritise practicality, ingenuity and durability. Our pieces are constructed from a signature MAN–TLE cloth, purpose-made in collaboration with family–run factories in some of Japan's oldest textile regions. We source other featured materials and quality hardware from around the world to ensure every MAN–TLE item adapts, evolves, and ages with wear.
Our head–office, studio and flagship are located at 460 William Street, Perth, Western Australia. Every MAN–TLE garment is made with utmost attention to detail and a deep consideration for quality and longevity.
We partner closely with expert mills and factories in Japan, many of which are family–run and have operated for generations in some of the country’s oldest textile regions.With them, we share a dedication to preserving traditional craftsmanship and a fascination with the intricacies of textile development.
Wearability and the evolving nature of a garment are at the forefront of development. For example, our original cloth, MT–Wax, is designed to reveal new sound, colour, and texture over time. With washing and wear it changes in form, becoming personal to the body it covers.
Quality is carefully checked at every stage of production, from the selection of high–quality yarns for weaving to the final finishes before a garment is shipped. Rarely, small irregularities may appear. A slight bump, known as ‘orikizu’, may indicate where one yarn ends and another begins; a faint line, ‘tobikomi’, where dust has briefly caught in the loom. We embrace these quiet signifiers of process, rather than deem them as faults.
Most MAN–TLE fabrics are made from natural fibres, chosen for their durable, breathable and wearable qualities. We intend for these garments to last for many years, given they receive the correct care, including mindful washing and repair when necessary. Most garments can be hand washed or gently machine washed, please refer to the care labels for more information. If preserving a garment’s original appearance is your intention, we recommend spot cleaning, steaming, and airing in the shade.
