Ryukyu Indigo, Piece by Piece
Dyed by hand, this original cotton/hemp double cloth can only be worked in five–metre lengths and requires repeated immersion and rinsing to build its depth of colour – first with sumi (ink), then with Ryukyu indigo.
Producing greenish Ryukyu indigo begins with cultivating the fields by hand, specifically in Okinawa. The plants are then harvested before being soaked, fermented, extracted and purified into precipitated indigo for dyeing.
We cut this cloth into S8 Weather Shirts and S5 Shop Shirts for the recent R20 release.
